Best of 2003: Best 1950s "Moderne" Furnishings

Boomerang for Modern
2040 India Street, Little Italy

Remember falling-leaf chairs? Surfboard coffee tables? Blue-and-white cushioned stackable chrome chairs? Right now it's the young who are buying this stuff again -- for the first time. Since 1985, David Skelley's shop has carried original designs by design luminaries including Paul Voltaire, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Jean Prouve, and local artist Greta Grossman. Noguchi coffee tables start at $1000. The same for a Grossman table lamp. Jean Prouve's standard chair is $495. If you're just starting out, try a Paul McCobb occasional piece such as a dresser for $250 to $500. Open 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday; closed Sunday.
