With all flights cancelled, a neurosurgeon who’s desperately needed in the ER (Idris Elba) and a journalist en route to her own wedding (Kate Winslet) split the cost of a charter plane, hoping to slip past a pending snowstorm. No sooner do they take off than pilot Beau Bridges earns his wings in a death scene worthy of Dana Andrews in Airport 1975. It’s worth seeing this for the spectacular one-take crash and little else. (The seamless CG work follows the camera on a paperclip flight pattern as it careens through the cabin.) The romance is forced and phony — after only two weeks together, the two are behaving like an old married couple. Spoiler alert: instead of ending on the couple’s inevitable rescue, screenwriters J. Mills Goodloe and Chris Weitz insist on dragging out the conclusion for another 20 minutes. They should have stuck to the subject at hand — survival — and jettisoned the improbable fling for the equally improbable sequel.
