After her doctor issues a death sentence, Martha (Diane Keaton) packs up and moves to a retirement community in Georgia where it’s presumably much cheaper to shoot than New York or L.A. While unpacking she discovers a megaphone and high school uniform and decides to go out cheering. That is more than can be said for any members of the audience brave enough to see this condescending slop through to the end. What’s funnier than an old bird flipping the bird? Not much, at least according to Zara Hayes, a documentarian exploring for the first time the limitless formulaic possibilities of geezer porn. Why must so many films depict older Americans as either burdensome shames or doddering sources of cuddly amusement? A paean to euthanasia and an embarrassment to all parties involved, particularly Keaton who believed in this so much that she agreed to produce. And if DC is looking for someone to play the Joker in a female reboot, Jacki Weaver’s grotesque “Cookie Puss left in the rain” makeup job doubles as an audition reel.
