Wild Goose Dreams

Where: La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego

Ongoing: until Sunday, October 1, 2017

Hansol Jung's new musical depicts the growing bond between Minsung, a South Korean whose family's in the U.S., and Yoo Nanhee, a North Korean defector. Much of it takes place in cyberspace, and the La Jolla Playhouse production, imaginatively directed by Leigh Silverman, ranks as among the most intricate in some time. A seven-person chorus responds to events, and deliberatley blurs them; avatars shadow Minsung and Yoo, as does her trickster father's spirit (the leads -- James Kyson, Yunjun Kim, and Francis Jue -- are standouts). The rich tapestry makes for a strong beginning and conclusion, but overpowers weak scenes in the middle. Though certainly watchable now, a thorough fine-tuning could make Dreams into something special. Worth a try.
