Twelfth Night

Where: The Old Globe Theatre, 1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego

Cost: $29 - $72

Age limit: Not available

Ongoing: until Sunday, July 26, 2015

The most memorable part of the Old Globe's heavy-handed effort is a parade of roses during a scene change. The stage becomes a Valentine's Day blur of reds. But this visual is cosmetic, external to the play. Take it away and the production is forced, often one-note, and the acting stiff. The comedy's built-in, but the cast pushes for laughs, and the extended bits overstay their visit. Todd Almond's original music nicely showcases the songs, but overall, Shakespeare's text plays fifth fiddle.
