Atticus Finch, the noblest lawyer of them all, brave young Scout, mysterious Boo Radley (whose first name's his effect on children): the unforgettable characters from Harper Lee's novel take the stage, at New Village Arts, in a capably done production. Manny Fernandes anchors the evening as wise, forthright Atticus. Durwood Murray does quality work as the embattled Tom, wrongly accused of a heinous crime, and Yolanda Franklin makes the maid Calpurnia a gentle force. The acting overall is uneven, though. On the plus side, Tim Wallace's set - the rundown Radley house stage right, the Finch's stage left - and Bill Bradbury's subtle, excellent original music enhance. Ardent fans of the novel may find Christopher Sergel's adaptation on the thin side. But he, and the NVA production, handle the important trial scene to good effect.
Worth a try.
