This classic musical intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice, and each is well-defined in Kirsten Chandler's seamless direction for San Diego Musical Theatre. The piece was ahead of its time in 1949, yet viewed by today's standards, it retains some stereotypical ideas of race relations and women's role in society. While Carolyn Agan as Nellie displays a fine voice, the hick side of her character is overdone. Robert J. Townsend offers a genuine portrayal of Emile de Beque, and has a believable rapport with Nellie. Augustine Wells entertains as Luther Billis, but can sometimes be too broadly comic. Though opportunities for women have come a long way since World War II, the play still packs an emotional wallop. The score is as glorious as ever under the astute musical direction of Don LeMaster.  Worth a try.
