The Loneliest Girl in the World
What does a gay boy in the late 1950's see in a religious pop singer who lands the second runner-up spot in the miss America Pageant? Apparently a bit of himself. Tommy struggles with his sexual identity and finds himself drawn to Anita Bryant, the lonely girl on the radio who continually strives for stardom. Tommy's idealistic views are challenged when Anita becomes a devout, vocal opponent to the growing LGBT movement. Politically relevant even today the world premiere musical often feels over-the-top, until you realize it's grounded in a true story. Diversionary's production features a fine ensemble cast, adept at singing, dancing, acting,.and comedic timing. Paper doll costumes add humor and a dash of nostalgia to blend with the sparse set design. Worth a try.
