Quantcast

The Last Wife

Where: Cygnet Theatre, 4040 Twiggs Street, San Diego

Cost: $38 - $59

Age limit: Not available

Ongoing: until Sunday, February 11, 2018

A woman navigates the treacherous terrain of marriage to a brutish, hot-tempered bully and powerful head of state. The play is about Kate Parr, sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, but is set in the present day. Playwright Kate Hennig's use of contemporary language and Cygnet Theatre's handsome, modern setting make the parallels evident. Henry's previous wives suffered divorce, death in childbirth, and beheading. Hennig's point seems to be that it was -- and still is -- dangerous business being a woman. Yet one intelligent, tenacious, and compassionate woman can clear the path for those who follow, including future queens Mary and Elizabeth I. The mostly fine cast includes Allison Spratt Pearce and Manny Fernandes doing the heavy lifting as Kate and Henry. While the overlong play is not without problems, it serves up insights on a little known historical figure  with a side of female empowerment. Worth a try.
