Full of witticisms, wordplay, and biting social commentary, Oscar Wilde's most well-known play doesn't need any cleverness. Director Maria Aitken recognizes this and provides a straightforward, lavish period production at the Old Globe. In Earnest, two bachelors invent fictitious characters to escape their responsibilities, but soon find themselves tangled in their own lies. The comedy skewers Victorian ideals, especially the notion of style over substance. The production has style in spades -- including a smart, fun set design and sumptuous costumes -- while deftly handling the play's more, ah, earnest subject matter, including marriage, class conflict, love, and lies. A top-notch cast brings Wilde's humor to the fore with impeccable timing. But Kate Abbruzzese as Gwendolyn and Helen Cespedes as Cecily prove especially entertaining frenemies. Critic's Pick.
