How many actresses can you name who have had a haircut christened in their honor? They may not know Louise Brooks by name, but 90 years after the fact, any good stylist can still cut a Lulu. Speaking of lulus, that’s also the best way to describe G.W. Pabst’s picture, now a decade shy of its centenary. Brooks’ performance as a sexually promiscuous flapper set a standard for modern womanhood in 1929, and it continues to shock and delight audiences to this day. For those who have never experienced the nerve-prickling rapture of a silent movie projected on a screen with live musical accompaniment, here is an opportunity to be devoutly cherished. Forget about SR, THX, DTX, SDDS, TITAN-XC, and yes, even that scientific marvel of the ages, D-BOX. They’re canned alphabet soup served cold compared to the warming extravagance of Russ Peck at the Fox Theater organ. Screens as part of the Fox Theatre at 90 series.
