Gordon Gidlund will focus on how much Shakespeare was a part of the cultural literacy of the country at the time, as shown by theatre attendance, allusions in political speeches and soldiers' letters, and Lincoln's near-obsessive interest in the Bard, with the terrible irony of course being that he was killed by a noted Shakespearean actor.
