Native American Story & Song
November has been designated as Native American Heritage Month. The Communication Department and the Music Department of Grossmont Community College is presenting “Native American Story and Song 2019 in Griffin Gate on the college campus. “Native Talk” is a unique storytelling program of traditional and original tales which includes native stories, language, and flute music. Original flute songs will accompany the traditional local and California stories. In addition, the presentation includes a display and discussion of native made museum quality artifacts such as tools, clothing, baskets, bow and arrows, shells, rabbit furs, and musical instruments. The artifacts and stories together illustrate local native life in the pre-contact era. There will be a discussion of the materials and techniques used to make and play early native flutes, modern flues, and similarities of instruments across cultures. Clapper sticks, gourd rates, and bone whistles will also be featured. The presentation promotes an awareness of local San Diego native culture, history, and contemporary revitalization and preservation efforts.
