San Diego new music collective Figmentum cracks open a treasure chest of sounds in a performance featuring new chamber works for toy instruments. Melodicas, psalteries, and toy pianos take center stage in this fun and inventive concert, which is certain to pique the imagination and delight the ear. Works to be performed include Alex Temple’s jazz-influenced Thick Line for flute, melodica, and clarinet; d.j. binkowski’s character study of flute, toy pasaltery, and melodica, definition on an idiom; and Niloufar Iravani’s sparkling Infinite for toy piano trio, flute, and clarinet. Dedicated to uncommon sounds in uncommon places, Figmentum has established itself at the forefront of the alternative new music scene, commissioning works from a diverse population of composers featuring novel combinations of traditional and toy instruments in a chamber music format.
