Cinco de Mayo Mariachi
Immerse yourself in the traditions and stories of mariachi music with the performance of Cinco de Mayo Mariachi at this free RB Library Discovery concert, from 3 to 4 pm Saturday, May 12. The non-profit Youth Philharmonic Orchestra's (YPO) 20-member City Heights Mariachi, will perform a variety of songs, including Guadalajara, Los Aguacates, La Cigarra, El Son de Conejo, Los Golondrinas, and the popular La Raspa (Mexican Hat Dance). For a sneak peek, enjoy a recent performance of Guadalajara by the City Heights Mariachi at a community festival: youtube.com/watch?v=gsG6pyRzyGM. Directed by Mario Eguia, the musicians are a group of adults and youth who study at YPO's City Heights Music School (CHMS). Classes are held in City Heights at the Mid-City Church of the Nazarene and Franklin Elementary. For more info on the CHMS, see cityheightsmusicschool.com. The Discovery series of concerts at the library serve to educate the public about various music forms and to expand the opportunity for local musicians to perform and provide insights to their music. Mariachi music is popular in the San Diego area and dates back to 18th century Western Mexico. It is now recognized by UNESCO as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage." Like all Discovery concerts at the library, there is no charge for this performance and all ages are welcome.
