On May 31, 2017, Bay City Television closed its doors for good after serving San Diego television viewers for nearly 64 years. Bay City was the U.S. arm of the world’s only bi-national television operation, with a broadcasting license issued in one country (Mexico for XETV Channel Six) yet serving viewers in another (United States) in the English language and broadcasting American programming. How and why did Bay City and its counterpart in Mexico (RTSA) come into existence? What unique challenges did they have to overcome? What strategic missteps did they make along the way? Is Bay City the “canary in the coal mine” for locally owned and controlled broadcast stations? This presentation in the Gateway Center will answer those questions.
