Crisis of Commemoration
Held during the Southwest Seminar Consortium on Colonial Latin America occurring October 5-7 at UC San Diego, this talk aims to spark dialogue about the first contact experiences between Indigenous Peoples and Europeans in the Americas, focusing on the continued debates around the celebrations and commemorations of Columbus and Cabrillo and the struggle to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day. The lecture will feature guest speakers Dr. Ray Ashley, President and CEO of the San Diego Maritme Museum; Frank Salazar, Cultural Collections and Program Manager of the Imperial Valley Desert Museum; and Dr. Kevin Terraciano, Professor of History at UCLA.
