Petite Madeline

Nestled between the ocean and interstate is Oceanside’s Petite Madeline. A delightfully organic, surprisingly gourmet and genuinely local patisserie. Honestly, if my soul was a café, I hope it’d be this one.

The original Madeline was opened by this brother and sister (adorable) who noticed Oceanside’s desperate lack of pastries. The sister, a business woman, dropped her spreadsheets and headed to culinary school. Spatula and spackle in hand, they started a year-long construction process. And then opened their doors…in the middle of the recession. But even a recession couldn’t interfere with the magnetic pull of the fresh baked, cream filled charm of Petit Madeline.

Three years later, the sibs opened a second location, on the corner of 101 and Pier View Way, where I stumbled through their sparkling doors. Greeted by friendly staff and pastries that made my heart race, I felt like I had wandered into the infancy of the Friends Café. The brew was steaming, the couches were cozy and the art made me slightly uncomfortable…which is exactly what I like art to do.

P.S. Halfway through my cinnamon sugar laced croissant (delicious) the fraternal half of this entrepreneurial team strolled in, armed with trays full of fresh baked goodness. An affable host, he stopped to chat for ten minutes! As if I needed another reason to adore Petite Madeline.
