Wednesday Movie Night returns to Propagandist

A Ghostbusters screening and a preview of their new cocktail The Gatekeeper re-kick this weekly event off perfectly.

It’s “an awesome way to spend a hump-day evening: an hour of cocktails and community followed by the screening of a classic film,” Brian Divine, proprietor of Propagandist, said via email in regards to the resurgence of his bar’s Wednesday Movie Night.

The movie screens on the three TVs behind the bar and is also projected on an 8-foot screen in front of the stage.

The audio is run through their concert-quality house speakers and church pews are set up on the floor in front of the stage “to make the movie the central focus.”

Propagandist started holding their weekly movie nights shortly after their grand opening back in March, running until the end of summer before falling towards the wayside.

Although Divine and his wife, Jessica, had been planning to resurrect movie night for a while, the details- the screening of Ghostbusters and a sneak preview of one of their new cocktails The Gatekeeper- fell into place with a misheard word while Divine was at the bar.

Divine knew the words “The Gatekeeper… wasn’t what they said” but he “immediately thought that would be a great name for a new cocktail.”

Knowing he wanted to use Green Chartreuse and finding inspiration from two classic cocktails he personally enjoys, Divine went to work

The Gatekeeper’s other ingredients include Luxardo Maraschino Liquer, Old Overholt Rye Whiskey and Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters.

With the drink concocted, Divine recalled that he knew seven people who hadn’t seen the movie Ghostbusters, from where The Gatekeeper cocktail takes its name, thus inspiring the return of movie night.

"We hope to get it going again now that we are more established," Divine goes on to say.

"I've always enjoyed the night... It was entirely community based and that's the goal.

"And to create a good reason to have a cocktail and share laughs over a classic you normally wouldn't think to put on."

Plus, “if you want, you can be in bed by 11.”

Amen.

Show Propagandist (835 Fifth Ave) you ain’t afraid of no ghosts tomorrow, Wednesday, January 30.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the flick starts at 8 p.m..
