SXSW (Thankfully) Approaches Its End

So where were we?

After Thursday’s San Diego at Sahara showcase I headed downtown with the Scribe dudes for their set at Stack Burger. Here are a few more shots from the Sahara gig, which organizer Ryan Blue named something like “Lots of Free Parking Fest” by virtue of the venue’s peripheral location.

Sour Soul (Mexico City)

Downtown at Lambert’s, Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses, Soul Asylum) was wrapping up a set before non-profit label Rock the Cause kicked off a tribute to Athens alt-folk musician Vic Chesnutt.

Chesnutt was partially paralyzed in a car accident at the age of 18 and went on to play from a wheelchair for 27 years until he died of a muscle relaxer overdose on Christmas, 2009.

Luke Redfield (you’ll recognize him from my previous SXSW dispatches) organized a recent Chesnutt tribute album, Minnesota Remembers Vic Chesnutt, to benefit the Lifeworks Foundation for people with disabilities and the Sweet Relief Fund, a Huntington Beach-based organization that assists musicians in paying medical bills.

I spent yesterday recuperating in a hotel room outside of town. Everyone is thoroughly exhausted from the frantic scrambling around Austin come Friday at SXSW, and my own delirium was compounded with the sharp pain of what is either a fractured rib or a torn muscle from an alien whooping cough that recently floored me for about two weeks.

After some much needed rest, I headed to Papi Tino's on East Sixth today for a free set by Zorch. The Austin duo combines the machine gun fury of Lightning Bolt with the lysergic synth arpeggios of Black Moth Super Rainbow, and the resulting noise is as much ecstatic as it is terrifying.

Check in tomorrow for updates on the apex of the festival before everyone packs up their gear, grabs one last breakfast taco, and points their tour van home.
