Drones at Home - Phase III Begins

According to several major media sources, US drone strikes have increased in Pakistan over the weekend: 3 strikes in 3 consecutive days (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday). Pakistan, a member of The Nuclear Club, has been publicly demanding an end to the drone strikes, to no avail. The US announced that one of the recent drone strikes killed top level Al Quada leader, Abu Yahya al-Libi. As these events unfold, Phase III of the Drones at Home exhibition at UCSD is taking place.

Phase II, organized by the gallery@calit2, Jordan Crandall, Sheldon Brown, and Ricardo Dominguez, consisted of panel discussions, round table conversations, a performance by Crandall, the screening of the independent film Sleep Dealer, and catering (including beer, wine, and coffee). The event mixed Sci-Fi authors, artists, and hactivists with a former Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) employee, who was a lead creator of a hummingbird mini-drone.

Phase III is set to consist of a series of workshops and events happening a bit sporadically throughout the summer, up to September 14th. One of the first scheduled events, listed as part of Phase III, is a talk by Matthew Battles, co-founder of HiLowBrow.com. His poem regarding drones is featured in the gallery known as gallery@calit2.

In the event's abstract, Battles is quoted saying “perhaps in drones we catch a glimpse, uncanny and yet reassuring, of the poetry that comes after us.”

Battles will be joined by Visual Arts professor and hacktivist, Ricardo Dominguez, who will speak on “Zombie Drones, or (Twice-Told-Tales).”

Drones at Home is free and open to the public. You are asked to please RSVP with the gallery coordinator, Trish Stone at [email protected]
