1,600 pounds of marijuana seized at Otay Mesa border crossing
A truckload of cucumbers provided ineffectual cover to a clandestine shipment of marijuana that was intercepted last week at the Otay Mesa border crossing, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials reported yesterday.
On Thursday evening, a Mexican national driving a tractor trailer entered the cargo port with a load declared as cucumbers bound for market. After pulling the driver into secondary inspection, inspectors began probing boxes of produce and struck something firmer than expected. After a thorough investigation, 288 sealed marijuana packages containing over 1,600 pounds of the plant were discovered, with a street value stated by officers at $721,000.
The driver was arrested and booked into Metropolitan Correctional Center pending arraignment on federal drug importation charges.
