Dumanis records anti-DUI radio spots

More checkpoints planned around the holiday weekend

The “AVOID the 15 DUI Task Force,” administered by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and comprised of 15 local law enforcement agencies overall, are stepping up DUI enforcement activities again over the Fourth of July holiday, scheduling both a host of checkpoints and another round of “saturation patrols” where a higher-than-normal patrol schedule floods a target neighborhood with officers looking for drivers who appear to be impaired.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has even stepped in, appearing for morning drive-time interviews on local Clear Channel radio stations Channel 933 and Star 94.1. Dumanis also recorded a commercial spot that is airing on the two stations this week.

“By partnering with two popular radio stations, we’re targeting our message to younger listeners who can relate to these radio stations’ on-air personalities,” says Dumanis in a post on the county’s website. “Our office prosecutes about 10,000 cases of driving under the influence every year. I hope this campaign will get people’s attention, cause them to think twice, take a cab or arrange for a designated driver— and maybe even save a life.”

Saturation patrols begin tonight and will run through Sunday at various points around the county. Controlled checkpoints are scheduled in Encinitas, Poway, National City, Oceanside, and San Diego on Friday night, with more in Imperial Beach and San Diego on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
