Who's investigating Filner? It's who's NOT investigating him

Now Allred wants attorney general, city attorney to pile on

The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee is investigating San Diego Mayor Robert Filner. Well, not really, but it might as well be.

In today's (Aug. 6) U-T, Los Angeles sexual harassment attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing a former Filner staffer, called on City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, a Filner hater, to investigate an alleged incident with an ex-Marine female.

The day before, Allred and her client, Irene McCormack Jackson, met with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and representatives of the state attorney general. The Los Angeles Times speculated that the A.G. might use a rare statute to accuse Filner of egregious misconduct in office.

The Reader's Matt Potter this morning pointed out the multifarious connections of Sheriff Bill Gore with the people trying to force Filner to resign. John Lynch, chief executive of the U-T -- gunning for Filner as soon as he considered running for the office -- gave money to Gore. So did hotel barons and others, including Linden Blue, whose longtime companion was one of the women who charged the mayor with untoward behavior.

Then there is the alleged investigation by the U.S. Attorney's office. Filner or an aide obviously erred by letting Sunroad give a donation to unrelated nonprofits to get approval for a development project.

But the second so-called offense is laughable. Another developer got what it wanted but donated to a nonprofit that WAS related to the project in question. In any case, both of these are definitely civil matters -- not criminal ones.

But that distinction makes no difference when both private individuals and the public sector are piling on, manipulating the local mainstream media.

If even half the complaints of women can be believed, Filner's behavior is reprehensible. But under U.S. law and tradition, he is entitled to due process. He is being hounded out of office by a cabal that lost the election.

Can Allred poison any jury pool by taking her case to government agencies and trotting out other alleged victims? Legally, perhaps she can -- but ethically?

This could happen to YOU.
