Tijuana’s piece of Olympic dream likely over

Olympic Committee notifies San Diego bi-national host out of question

The longshot bid for San Diego and Tijuana to jointly host the 2024 Summer Olympics has likely been shut down in the early stages of the process. As of April 26th, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter stated that the SD-TJ area was among 10 cities expressing interest in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics so far. The Associated Press reported Tuesday, April 30th, that U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky said the city of San Diego was informed the IOC charter does not allow a bid by bordering countries.

The bid was considered a longshot considering obstacles the U.S.-Mexico border would supply. The last and only time Mexico hosted the Olympics was the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

Since San Diego can't even solve the parking problem in Balboa Park, or fix all the street potholes and bad sidewalks, how could it possibly think it could host the Olympics?

Well, with a new mayor, things will be, are being, more reasonably approached (i.e., the parking solution in BP). Just because we have had rotten mayor and government in the past, there is always hope. If only we had a council that would act as reasonably as the new mayor, it could happen.

Oh darn. We can't go bankrupt spending $50B on an Olympics. We will have to continue to find creative ways to go bankrupt.

Actually, when I heard about this plan the other morning on NPR, my first thought was that they had stolen it from an Almost Factual News posting. The idea was so utterly preposterous that I thought it had to be a joke. I mean an actual joke, not the unintended one it has become. As screwed up as L.A. can be a times, I think this way beyond what the idiots up here would even think of. LOL!!!

Some highly improbable cities in the world have hosted the Olympics, and Mexico City in 1968 may have been the most improbable. Wasn't that the same year that their government massacred hundreds of protesters (even using helicopter gunships) in that city?

Yes, you are correct. I believe it happened 10 days or so before opening ceremonies. According to what was said later, that was one of the events Tommie Smith and John Carlos were commenting on when they raised their black gloved fists on the medal stand.
