Lobbyist for San Diego newspaper publisher to appear in U-T sponsored debate against labor chief

Downtown super-lobbyist and lawyer Paul Robinson - whose clients include the Grand del Mar, the ritzy resort owned by U-T San Diego publisher Doug Manchester - is set to debate Lorena Gonzalez, Secretary-Treasurer and CEO for the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council about the merits of Proposition 30, Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown's ballot bid to boost California taxes.

The October 4 verbal joust, hosted by U-T San Diego, is to be covered live by the newspaper and web operation's cable TV channel, U-T TV, according to an email dispatched today by GOP Lincoln Club P.R. man Anthony George Manolatos, a former U-T reporter and ex-aide to GOP city councilman Kevin Faulconer.

As previously noted here, Robinson - a longtime member of the Lincoln Club's board, and the group's incoming vice chairman, according to the Manolatos news release - has been working on Manchester's behalf regarding the Grand del Mar's still-unresolved battle with city planning and environmental regulators over a long-standing series of alleged permit violations at the sprawling hotel and adjacent golf course, which, despite its name, is within San Diego city limits.

Robinson has also been a key lobbyist for Irwin Molasky, the powerful Las Vegas developer with financial interests here who was once a partner with the late mobster Moe Dalitz in the La Costa resort, long the subject of controversial lore about Mafia influence in San Diego and beyond.

Both Manchester and Molasky are backers of GOP mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio, and each gave heavily to this year's Proposition B, the so-called pension reform measure opposed by labor.

Robinson has also contributed to DeMaio.
