Federal inmates shipped out of Baja state prisons

Almost 150 inmates were transferred out of state prisons in Baja California to a new federal prison in Ocampo, Guanajuato Sunday evening, October 28th. The federal inmates being held in state prisons were taken from Tijuana, Ensenada, and Mexicali.

Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon inaugurated the new prison, simply named Federal Número 12, on October 9th. The state of the art facility is to house some of Mexico’s most dangerous criminals, mostly with organized crime ties. Spanish News Agencia EFE reported that 967 inmates have already been transferred to the prison from various states across the country.

Overcrowding has been a huge problem for Mexico as prisons are flooded with cartel linked criminals. Authorities have had no choice but to leave dangerous federal inmates in low security state prisons, some which have experienced large scale prison breaks. Mexico hopes to alleviate this problem by building eight new prisons under a public-private partnership model.

Little information was given on those transferred out of Baja except that they were some of the most dangerous inmates being held in the state.
