Frequent-flyer-felon Abdullah Alekabi back in court

A 23-year-old man already convicted of six crimes was back in court today, accused of another burglary.

Abdullah Alekabi has a criminal record dating back to 2007, when he was 18-years-old and stole a vehicle, according to prosecutor Benjamin Barlow.

Over the next few years, Alekabi was convicted of two burglaries and making a criminal threat and evade officers with wanton disregard for public safety and resisting arrest, according to allegations in court documents.

In June of this year Abdullah Alekabi was part of a 3-man-crew that took electronic devices from the Target store at 1010 North El Camino Real in Encinitas, a prosecutor now alleges.

A “loss prevention officer” from the store testified that he saw persons taking video games and Xbox 360 consoles and a Wii bundle from the electronics department. After reviewing store surveillance video, the witness said he was able to identify Abdullah Alekabi as one of the men gathering up items later determined stolen. The witness particularly remarked on tattoos seen on the alleged thief in-store and the defendant in court today.

Detective Kurt Cartie, a 17-year-veteran with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, said the suspect first “denied any involvement or knowledge of the situation” but at a later interview “he essentially admitted to his involvement.” The detective said Alekabi confirmed it was “his buddy’s car” seen on surveillance video that drove away, after a man got in with stolen video games in his hands.

Superior Court Judge Sim von Kalinowski found sufficient evidence to hold Abdullah Alekabi to answer two new theft charges, and ordered the defendant back to court October 11.
