Local conservative groups turn to internship programs for help on campaigns

Republicans in San Diego County aren't waisting any time trying to create new jobs, even if some of those positions offer little to no pay.

In an advertisement on Internships.com, the "world's largest internships marketplace," the Republican Party of San Diego County looks to fill ten part-time paid positions lasting through November 6.

The positions, according to the post, are "a valuable opportunity to any politically-minded individuals to take part in San Diego's high-energy and fast-paced elections.

"As a campaign intern during this election cycle you will have the opportunity to take part in our aggressive voter outreach programs, gain valuable work experience, make a difference in deciding the outcome of this year's competitive election cycle, and make some money in the process."

But the Republican Party of San Diego County isn't the only conservative group with hopes of recruiting college students to their cause and it is not the only group that has taken to Internships.com to do so.

The State Republican Party has also entered the fray, offering five unpaid positions on the website. The state GOP is looking for people to be a part of Victory 2012, a national program to "elect Republican candidates at all levels of the government, including Presidential and Congressional, as well as state and local level elected offices."

And then there's George Plescia, a state-senate candidate from San Diego, who has internships up on the website. In his post, Plescia is seeking "both paid field staff and campaign interns for day to day operations and voter contact," for "a great opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of political campaigns on a highly watched race."

And while some groups choose the internet to post internships other conservative groups have gone to specific colleges to find new recruits.

Last month, the American Action Network, a conservative "social-welfare organization" based in Washington DC posted an internship at the University of San Diego. The group, according to its spokesperson, said the group advocates "principles of freedom, limited government, American exceptionalism, and strong national security."
