Plea deal for experienced robber

Repeat felon expects more than 17 years prison for latest

Torrence Andrew Williams, 36, admitted three felonies in connection with a robbery and then police chase, which occurred in Escondido last July, according to plea deal paperwork.

A little before 11 a.m on July 5, 2012, a robber came into the Check ‘n Go on Mission Avenue, according to testimony at a hearing last August.

A tall man, wearing a hoodie sweatshirt and sweatpants, set his brown wallet on the countertop and then simulated a gun in the pocket of his hoodie, according to the store clerk, who testified.

“He came around the counter, demanded that I put the cash in the bag.” She said the man brought his own bag, “it was a brown grocery bag,” and she put $984 cash in the bag. The man ran out the front door and then she locked the doors and went to a back room to dial 911, the clerk testified. Then she heard pounding and kicking on the front doors, and she looked around in time to see the man was back -- he grabbed his wallet that he had left on the counter and ran out the door again. The woman noticed his sweatpants were torn, ripped around the crotch area.

A man at a neighboring business noticed a man kicking at the door of the Check ‘n Go and he got cell phone video of the man. The robber reportedly ran back and forth through parking lots, over a security fence, and got into a black Dodge Charger.

Escondido Police Sergeant Craig Miller said a black Dodge Charger, registered to Torrence Andrew Williams, accelerated away from responding officers and crashed into a white SUV less than 2 miles away. The driver that was pulled from the smashed Dodge was wearing sweatpants torn around the crotch, and more than $900 cash was recovered, police said.

Torrence Andrew Williams, 36, pleaded guilty this month to three felonies: robbery and burglary and evade officers with wanton disregard.

Prosecutor Benjamin Barlow alleges Williams’ felony career began when he was 18 years old, with a conviction for stolen vehicle and felony evade officers with reckless driving in Oceanside. Two years later Williams stole another car, in Vista, and then in 2001 he was sentenced to 8 years prison for two separate armed robberies in Escondido.

Torrence Andrew Williams is expected to be sentenced to 17 years and 8 months state prison at his next court date, December 11, in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse.
