Bomb Scare at Two Imperial Beach Schools

Lt. Marco Garmo of the Imperial Beach Sheriff Station reported that at 2:30 pm Tuesday May, 1st an unknown male called and reported that he had placed bombs on the Mar Vista High School campus on Elm Ave. in Imperial Beach and that he was on a rooftop with a rifle.

The high school and adjacent Imperial Beach Elementary School were immediately put on lockdown. The Sheriff requested the San Diego Police Air Support Helicopter to secure rooftops in a one mile radius of the school. They also contacted San Diego Police for assistance with traffic and to help secure a safe exit route for students.

Sweetwater Union High School District officials say students were supposed to be let out of school at 2:35 p.m. but were kept on campus until shortly after 3:15 p.m. when they were directed to walk to nearby Veterans Park to be picked up by parents.

Coronado Police with K-9 units and Harbor Police Bomb and Arson teams were called to search the school campuses after all students had been evacuated.

One parent picking up her child from the elementary school after receiving a phone call from the school thought officials were doing a good job “They really seem to have things under control. Makes you feel safe.”
