Oceanside to Hold Special Election on Rent Control at Mobile-Home Parks

Oceanside city council on Wednesday will approve allocating $93,000 to place a controversial ordinance on the June ballot that would end rent control at mobile-home parks in the City.

The ballot measure comes after pro-business, conservative council majority, comprised of Jerry Kern, Gary Felien, and Jack Feller, approved the ordinance during a city council meeting in May 2011.

Opponents of the ordinance, led by Jim Sullivan, a resident of the Miramar Mobile Home Community, banded together and started a petition drive to overturn the ordinance. More than 15,000 signatures, over ten percent of the City's population, were submitted, forcing the council to either overturn the ordinance or spend the money to place it on the ballot.

The council majority refused to reverse their position during an August council meeting.

Now, in order to place it on the ballot, the fiscal conservative council members must agree to spend nearly $100,000 to let voters decide in June.

Update: The council approved the allocation, from reserves, during the January 4 council meeting.*
