Copley Foundation's Donation to New Downtown Library: $666,666

Her old GOP friend, former First Lady Nancy Reagan - famous for her fear of the triple six - might be uncomfortable, but a foundation run by the son of late Union-Tribune publisher Helen K. Copley gave exactly $666,666 to fund construction of the new public library downtown.

The payment represents part of the $2 million Copley has pledged to help pay for construction of the new facility.

Including that cash, the James S. and Helen Copley Foundation gave away a total of $5,637,267 during calendar year 2010, according to an IRS return filed late last year.

Continuing the drawdown of funds begun by David Copley after Helen Copley's death, the foundation, which began the year with about $12.6 million, ended it with remaining assets of just $7,138,374.

The biggest recipient was the UCLA Foundation in Los Angeles, which got $3 million.

In 2008, David Copley pledged a total of $6 million to endow the university's David C. Copley Chair for the Study of Costume Design and the David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design.

San Diego area beneficiaries of the foundation's legacy included the Sharp HealthCare Foundation, which got $500,000.

David Copley received a heart transplant at Sharp Hospital in June 2005.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, whose modernistic downtown annex to the Santa Fe Depot is named after Copley, got $428,600.
