Councilmember Gloria Responds to Community's Concerns Over Mid-City Rapid

Councilmember Todd Gloria's office says the councilmember understands the community's concerns over the Mid-City Rapid Bus project and he continues to work with SANDAG to mitigate any negative impacts to the community.

Katie Keach, Gloria's Deputy Chief of Staff, says Gloria has met with planners from SANDAG. The meetings resulted in the preservation of the "historic terrazzo sidewalk" outside the former State Theatre, and the addition of 33 parking spaces along Park Boulevard, instead of a loss of 16 spaces which was originally proposed.

And while Gloria acknowledges the complaints from residents, he continues to support the proposal.

"Councilmember Gloria continues to advocate for projects like streetcars to be funded sooner than highway projects. The Mid-City Rapid Bus project will preserve this precious right-of-way to ensure the desired streetcar project can be realized."

Another major concern expressed by Uptown residents is the congestion that will be caused by not allowing drivers to cross Park Boulevard on Polk Avenue.

"This closure is necessary for the Rapid Bus to operate efficiently," writes Keach. "Understanding that the people who regularly use this route to SR-163 will need an alternative, signal synchronization is happening on Washington Street to allow for all traffic to flow more efficiently in the corridor, at Councilmember Gloria’s request."
