Sanders Endorses Sherman For 7th District Council Seat

Mayor Sanders officially announced his support of Scott Sherman to represent the 7th district today. The endorsement is a major one for Sherman, whose other endorsements include the San Diego Republican Party and councilmember Kevin Faulconer.

"Scott Sherman is committed to restoring neighborhood services, which have suffered due to the economic downturn and resulting budget deficit,” said Mayor Sanders in a statement released by Sherman's camp.

“More importantly, Scott understands that restoring neighborhood services and our infrastructure backlog takes supporting and aggressively implementing real fiscal reforms like Comprehensive Pension Reform and managed competition. Scott’s commitment to real reform is why he is my choice for the 7th district councilmember.”

And while the endorsement is a boost for Sherman, who is running against democrat Matthew Kostrinsky and independent Rikard Hauptfeld, some district 7 residents are unsure what Sherman stands for, and who he is.

"Scott Sherman is a complete mystery to us," wrote one district 7 resident. "Nobody has heard of him. By now, I've met, or at least heard of most of the people active in the Navajo community. Is this a new local Republican strategy of recruiting complete unknowns, with no track record of community involvement, to run for city council, a la Lorie Zapf?"

According to his campaign website Sherman owns a small business and sits on the the board of the Insurance Brokers and Agents Association (IBA). There is no mention of involvement with community groups or advisory committees.

I contacted Sherman on his website asking for information where he stood on issues in his district, such as redevelopment in Grantville. There has been no response.
