Occupy San Diego Protester on Hunger Strike Arrested

Occupy San Diego media liason John Kenney, who is in his 33rd day of a hunger strike, was arrested at around 12:30 this morning at the Civic Center (dubbed Freedom Plaza by occupiers) for “illegal lodging.”

Eye witnesses report that Mr. Kenney was awake when police came and removed him for “sleeping,” according to an email from occupier Rick Halsey.

“Mr. Kenney may refuse bail and will continue his hunger strike while in custody,” writes Halsey. “Mr. Kenney’s health is extremely fragile. The arrest of Mr. Kenney continues a pattern of harassment the City of San Diego and the San Diego Police Department have conducted against peaceful Occupy San Diego protesters.”

Yesterday, an officer informed a protester at Freedom Plaza that all objects placed on the ground might be considered bombs and subject to confiscation, says Halsey.

Occupiers plan an overnight “Occupajama Party” tomorrow evening at the Civic Center Plaza to protest the continued “police harassment.”

Kenney’s hunger strike began “to protest San Diego City Council’s refusal to acknowledge the right of American citizens to express their 1st Amendment rights and to provide a public, safe place to do so 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Protester Julie Kramer is in the 5th day of her hunger strike pending an apology from San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne for his treatment of protesters.

Occupy San Diego is calling for the resignation of Police Chief Lansdowne by petition for the way he has handled the protests.
