Lemon Grove Considers Logging on to Social Media Sites

Officials in Lemon Grove feel the days of residents visiting the City website to look for upcoming events are over. During a hearing in October, city councilmembers and the mayor directed staff to draft a policy to use social media sites to promote events and announce other city activities. On December 6, the council will review that policy and consider signing on to Facebook and Twitter for a six-month trial run.

"Since the last website update in 2005, the City has taken the stance of cautiously observing and exploring how it can use this medium to stay connected to its residents," reads a report from staff. "Staff continues to provide as much information as possible on the website; however, only using the website limits the timeliness of disseminating key information."

To assure that no errant tweets or inappropriate posts surface, City Manager Graham Mitchell's office plans to monitor the sites closely, prohibiting any back and forth between residents and city employees.

"A team of one to three people will decide what information is released on behalf of the City with the City Manager acting as the final approving authority. No comments or posts shall be permitted that are not authorized by the City Manager.”

The council meets at 6pm to discuss the issue.
