The Hitcher Snippet

it came up blazing...screaming out a summer imperative.... ~~the golden waves of grain parted by a modern Moses called asphalt~~ ~*~

wheatland ripened

a Stang...ROAD CRUISADER....old..... renovated.....beloved...... dusty desert winding highway...top down..... wheels singing the song of hot asphalt and marshmellow skies...

bright yellow lines leading him to wanderlust

he almost missed her walking down the highway with a backpack slung over her shoulder...

as he passed her he saw that she was reading a book..... when he rolled down the window and asked "going"?

she yelled out "south" over the sound of the engine...."west first OK" he said......and she climbed into the car.....and continued reading..... she was the best kind of company.....but he didn't comprehend that 'til 20 mins later when he realised she hadn't said a word....when he glanced over he saw she was reading "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence"....."old book" he said......

"road book" she replied ....and continued to read...

when they crossed the border she put the book into her backpack....and he saw that it was nearly filled with books....."student" he asked...."reader" she replied and fished out a dog eared copy of "Travels With Charley" she rested her eyes and mind from time to time and watched the landscape go by

by the time they reached Old Highway 101 she was reading "The Motorcycle Diaries" she was a peaceful person to be around...good company.......quiet......no pressure....no inquiry...just reading....

when they stopped to eat. she brought a book in with her....she was really diggin' into this one...

"Siddhartha"....and he thought a discussion is bound to erupt over this one...."Hesse" he said and waited for the inevitable outpouring of plot...philosophy...mystical relevance....etc.....

his peaceful companion would show herself now...she'd be an intellectual buzzsaw....ready to cut thru Hesse as a writer of this book and all of his books.....and what should the name of "Magister Ludi" be ...that or "The Glass Bead Game"

"yeah " she said "gettin ready to do it"

"do it" ???? he quiryed......"yeah" she replied "sit by a river and let the world come to me"......

and the plot of the book came flowing like the river she was looking for into his brain....."aaahhhhhh" he said....and thought this may be an interesting and entertaining conversation after all

but she yawned lowered her head again and that was that.....

when he got up to leave she continued to sit and read....."going" he said ...."OK" she replied and continue to read......

he looked back once as he walked thru the door to get back into his car......for the first time he actually saw her.....slim...dark...long raven hair falling across her face as she read....a small starfish was tatooed on her shoulder..... were her eyes blue or grey...he couldn't remember............had he even looked at them ?

later that evening when he was walking the beach where he dropped her off near Neah Bay he thought about her....maybe she'd need a ride again when he traveled north back over the border......

but he knew he wouldn't see her again....she was the best road tripper he'd ever travel with....he had a strange feeling of disappointment it hadn't lasted longer...... he had always been the one to decide who could or couldn't enter his world....when the tables were turned it was a strange feeling for him.....one he didn't want to feel again.....
