Shout Out for the Home Teams from Carmel Mountain

I admit that I am not an avid football fan, but I was one in a screaming, yelling chorus of voices yesterday as Darren Sproles scored the winning TD for the Chargers. It seemed as though the entire condo complex erupted in a monstrous vocal "wave." It was plenty that the San Diego team won, but it was not lost on a lot of people that the "little guy" brought it home. Sproles showed us what giant talent and a unrelenting heart is all about. I am not, however, ignoring the fact that he had a great team behind him, so GO CHARGERS!

I debated about going to Mass last night because of the game. I went anyway. Monsignor always wears a Charger's jersey under his vestments on game days and, although I had no way of being sure, I'm assuming yesterday was no different. Philip Rivers is a friend of our parish, so the team enjoys plenty of prayer from the congregation...and lest we forget, Monsignor reminds us.

Speaking of San Diego sports teams: I am a devoted Padres fan, but I've been in despair about the ball club for a while...actually, to the point where I don't want to even watch the games. At one time, I had half-season tickets and I've joyfully attended Spring Training several times. Loved the team. My heart fell when they let Bochy go, as well as a number of key players. I'm unhappy that they're so willing to let Hoffman drift away. (I mean really...how CAN they do that? I'm guessing there's more to the story that hasn't been revealed.) I understand the financial situation...to a point. What I really don't understand is why the team isn't allowed to gel beyond one season. I'm sure there are a lot of opinions about that, so please share.

No doubt that the Moores are in unbelievable pain beyond the sale of the Padres, and the fans seem to have been on a ride alongside that pain too. I'm looking forward to supporting the new ownership and hope that all goes well...soon.

Last Saturday, I treated myself to one of my favorite Carmel Mountain restaurants: Athens Market Cafe. Great Greek food, reasonable prices, and I'm always able to find a seat. The Greek salad with salmon, chicken, or gyros, and hot pita bread served on the side...my hands down favorite! I have a tendency to get stuck on certain dishes, so I haven't tried many beyond the salad. I can recommend the Falafel, Chicken Gyros pita wrap, Grilled Flatbread (usually fills me up for lunch), and the Baklava and Galatobouriko. Customer service is friendly and accommodating. Next time you're in the Carmel Mountain neighborhood, give it a try.

The nationwide economic disaster has not left Carmel Mountain unmarked. Store closings include Linens 'n Things, Mervyn's, Elizabeth Brooks, among others. I was pleased to see a posted notice that our Borders will not be closing.
