Trio M Feb. 2, at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

This Thursday, Feb. 2, Athenaeum Jazz concludes its winter concert series with an all too rare performance by the critically acclaimed collaborative ensemble known as Trio M.

The trio is comprised of forward-leaning pianist Myra Melford, NYC drum veteran Matt Wilson, and contrabass virtuoso Mark Dresser.

Both Melford and Dresser lived in New York earlier in the decade.

"Myra and I both moved independently from NY to California in 2004 to teach at different UC's--Berkeley and UCSD. We had done a few duo gigs and loved it but we both wanted to play with drums and you can't get any better than Matt Wilson. Trio M began in 2006 and played our very first concert at the Athenaeum. Within a year, we recorded our first CD, Big Picture on Cryptogramophone in 2007," Dresser said.

Melford is a startlingly versatile musician, whose stylistic oeuvre spans the wide arc of pure lyricism to knotty cluster pounding and "prepared-piano" explorations. The New York Times referred to Wilson as being, "easily one of the best drummers of his generation." And Dresser himself has codified an entire language of highly personal innovations on the instrument.

"Playing with Matt and Myra is very special," says Dresser, "The music travels in many directions as we all contribute compositions. The trio functions without the typical hierarchy. As musicians and people, they're both highly inventive, ambitious, fun, warm-hearted and deep. I feel I can completely be myself with them. The piano trio is such a known entity and just by being ourselves we've found a new take on the tradition. This concert celebrates the release of our second CD, The Guest House on Enja."

The Athenaeum Library, located at 1008 Wall St. in La Jolla, only seats about 160 people, so, grab your tickets now. $21 for Athenaeum members, $26 for non-members. The concert begins at 7:30.
