Ben Goldberg/ Jeff Parker/ Ches Smith open Fresh Sound series.

Cutting edge music curator Bonnie Wright is back in San Diego, fresh from a six-month sojourn in New York City, where she attended more than 150 concerts as part of her ongoing effort to stay on top of the new developments in the avant garde of improvised and contemporary classical music.

She is kicking off her adventurous Fresh Sound series in a new location, the East Village Creative Compound, Space 4 Art, located at 325 E. 15th St.

The series opens Tuesday, March 6, with the Ben Goldberg Trio, featuring guitarist Jeff Parker, and drummer Ches Smith.

"Each of my previous concert series had a theme, like reeds, or voice + electronics. This time I wanted to have the theme focus on some of the musicians that I heard while I was in New York, although the first concert is a little slippery in that sense. Ben Goldberg is actually from San Francisco, and Jeff Parker is from Chicago, Ches Smith lives in New York, and I've heard him play there many times. He's a wonderful drummer," said Wright over coffee at her Mission Hills home.

Even though he's not a New Yorker, Wright notes that, "Ben, to me, is always pushing the boundaries. He was voted #1 Rising Star Clarinet in the 2011 DownBeat critics poll, and he has a beautiful sound. So I'm always looking forward to hearing what he's doing, the same thing for Ches Smith. Jeff Parker is one of the top guitar players in the world, and I've never heard him! So I'm looking forward to it."

Like all of Bonnie Wright's productions, these cats have serious credentials. Goldberg studied with reed masters Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano, and is a member of Nels Cline's New Monastery, the Tin Hat trio and Myra Melford's Be Bread .

Parker is an impressive musician and sound sculptor who is a founding member of the Chicago Underground, Thrill Jockey recording artists Isotope 217, and the band Tortoise. The Chicago Reader characterized him as "Arguably the most exciting and thoughtful jazz guitarist of the past two decades, a masterful free improviser who's also fluent in everything from postbop to postrock."

Smith came up in a scene of punk and metal musicians who were listening to jazz and free improvisation. Currently residing in Brooklyn, N.Y., he has performed with everyone from rock icon Iggy Pop to avant maverick John Zorn. He also gigs with guitarist Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, saxophonist Tim Berne's Los Totopos and has a quartet with Mary Halvorson, Tony Malaby and Andrea Parkins called These Arches.

Wright is looking forward to her collaboration with Space 4 Art. "Cheryl Nickel and Robert Leathers (Space 4 Art founders), have been to my concerts, at Sushi and The Loft, in the past. They approached me about curating my series there, which is important to me, because their mission and mine seem to be connected, which is to support the creation of new works of art. So it seemed to be a meeting of the minds for me."

Tickets are $15 general admission / $10 for students with ID. Street parking and $3 lots are nearby. Doors open at 7:30. Contact Bonnie to reserve your seat at [email protected]

The series continues, Monday, April 9, with a solo performance by guitarist James Moore.
