Acme K9 Services: Bruce, I miss you so....

Recently one of the dogs that I worked with was lost. He was "put down" as a matter of the politics of animals and in the end it does not matter who was wrong; it only matters that someone was.

Bruce was a sad statistic in the war, and it is a war, of the poor creatures that have no place in this world due to inconvenience. It certainly was not the fault of the foster parents who had enough love in their hearts to hire me to try to save this little angel; It was not the fault of the rescue who in the end had to make a decision that would keep them from a legal nightmare. It was not the fault of the person who got bit and had to call animal services. It was not the fault of the vet who had to give Bruce his last shot. Gee, I guess it was no ones fault but yet it was the fault of all of us.

Bruce was one of the pups in a litter that was found abandoned in El Centro, California. The litter was turned into the local animal shelter who has no room to keep dogs (or cats) and was picked up by one of the local animal rescue organizations in San Diego. From there he, and one of his sisters, went to a foster home and that is where I come into the picture.

Bruce was a wonderful, gentle soul who was just a little to frightened by the things going on around him in this world. He meant no harm but would chase after people who walked away from him and then would nip them on the back of the leg. He meant no harm but just wanted to make sure they got the message to leave him alone. His foster parents contacted me to see if I could help him get over his anxiety. Three weeks later he was no more.

Bruce was one of those dogs who needed time and patience but would eventually overcome his problems. The clock ran out on him. He was making great progress but one day he nipped a young woman (teenager) who said she was fine but when she went home she discovered that her leg was bruised. Her mother called and asked if Bruce had his rabies shot. No, he had not had it yet. That is not uncommon for such a young puppy but still the answer was no, he had not.

From there it went to shit for Bruce and all who loved him. The rescue now had a legal problem, the foster parents were in a bind, and everyone saw lawyers circling like buzzards (no offense) and the clock began to tick.

There is so much more that could be written about this terrible incident but the bottom line is that if only one of Bruce's parents had been spayed or neutered then all of this tragedy could have been avoided. There is no excuse to not fix your dog. There are cheap clinics, free clinics, and organization that will help with the expense of getting a dog, or cat, spayed or neutered. It is only our own bullshit that allows for the unwanted and uncared for animals to continue to breed and exist. If you have a pet you owe it to the world to spay or neuter. If you don't then you are the problem, not your pet.

We miss you Bruce. It was not your fault. It was ours.

P.S. If you are one the the dip shits who want to write some bullshit remark about the love that some of us have for the animals of this world why don't you just send me a message and tell me where we can meet if you are not a coward. One of us can go to jail, the other not.
