Padres continue losing ways in second half

The Padres lost to the Cardinals in the first game of a ten game road trip

The Padres bats were certainly awake to kick off the second half of the season on Friday in St. Louis, but unfortunately the pitching was fast asleep as the Cardinals throttled the Padres 9-6. The loss means that only the Miami Marlins have a worse road record in all of baseball.

Jason Marquis had one of his most ineffective outings of the season, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk in only five and one-third innings. Sean O’Sullivan, who was tabbed to be a starter when he was recently brought up, pitched the last two innings and gave up three runs on five hits and a walk.

Hitting wasn’t much of an issue with either club, but the Cardinals got the timely hitting that the Padres lacked. This is the difference between a team with a record that leads all of baseball in the Cardinals, and a Padres team that is floundering.

If there is a positive aspect in the Padres loss, it’s that maybe the bats are clicking again. Everth Cabrera, Chase Headley, Yonder Alonso, Will Venable, and Alexi Amarista had two hits each, but even with 13 total the Padres never really threatened.

Trying is something the Padres do well. Winning is something they are not doing well, and beginning the second half with a loss – even to a club as balanced and solid as are the Cardinals – can’t be encouraging.

The Padres waited until the top of the seventh inning to score, posting two runs, but were already six runs behind at that point. St. Louis answered with three more in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

The Padres kept trying, but with only one run in the eighth and three in the ninth, the score reads much closer than the game actually was at any point. This has been the signature of this club for much of the season, in falling behind early and falling short in rallies in the late innings.

The loss drops the Padres to 42-55 where they remain in last place in the National League West, 8 ½ games behind the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Starting pitcher Jason Marquis drops to 9-5 on the season with the loss.

Notes:

Manager Buddy Black has yet to announce the starting pitcher for Tuesday’s game in Milwaukee against the Brewers, so it’s possible that a move will be made before that game. Since Sean O’Sullivan threw two innings on Friday he doesn’t figure to go in that spot. It’s possible that Black will make an announcement either Saturday or Sunday.

On Saturday, the Padres will go against the Cardinals again in the second game of the three-game set. For the Friars, Edinson Volquez (6-8, 5.74) will face Lance Lynn (11-4, 3.92) of the Cardinals. Game time is 4:15 PM PDST and will be broadcast by the usual suspects, radio on 1090 AM and television on Fox Sports San Diego. Para escuchar o ver al juego en Español, radio XEMO 860 AM o Fox Deportes San Diego tiene su cobratura.
