SDSU Aztecs down Point Loma Nazarene for ninth straight win

Despite hanging around during the first half, PLNU was no match for the bigger and better Aztec squad.

SDSU faced off against Point Loma Nazarene University Tuesday night at Viejas Arena. Despite a close first half, the Aztecs blew out the Sea Lions 76-49, giving them a sweep of all of the San Diego area schools. The Aztecs head to Hawaii next for the Diamond Head Classic and a possible championship match up with fourth ranked Arizona. This was the Aztecs 9th straight win and 29th straight against teams from California.

Game notes:

Without Franklin, Xavier Thames stepped up. Leading scorer Jamaal Franklin was out resting a back injury on Tuesday that has hampered him all year. Thames shouldered the weight scoring 17 points on a night where he shot 80% from the field, including making both of his three point attempts. Tapley continued his brilliant shooting by putting in 15 points of his own.

Three pointers key for both teams. The Sea Lions stayed within five points in the first half by making 6 three pointers, while SDSU had only made 2-8 from behind the arc. The second half was a different story. The Aztecs mad 5 three pointers shooting above 71% in the second half and held PLNU to only 2 three pointers.

James Johnson and great player rotation help the Aztecs. We have noted before how many players coach Steve Fisher finds double figure minutes for. He was at it again last night with Franklin out, getting nine different players more 12 minutes. This was also the first time Johnson, who transferred from Virginia and just became eligible, saw game time for the Aztecs. He scored his first NCAA field goal and finished with 6 points, shooting 2-3 and dishing out an assist.
