Week 3 High Five

Game of the Week

#2 Oceanside (1-1) at #8 Mira Mesa (1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

For the third straight week, the Game of the Week features two Top 10 teams. After splitting with Servite and Chaparral, Oceanside plays its first section opponent when it travels to face Mira Mesa on Friday. Offensively, quarterback Tofi Pao Pao (176 yards, 2 TDs last week) and running back Ryshaud Keegan (21 carries, 144 yards) lead the Pirates. Mira Mesa opened the season with a bye and rolled Rancho Buena Vista in its season opener last week. Last year’s Division I runner-up is flush with talent and boasts the two-quarterback tandem of Dominic Richardson and Trey Lomax. These two teams have met each of the past three seasons and Oceanside has prevailed each time – including a 17-14 win last year.

Best of the Rest

#4 Cathedral Catholic (2-0) at #3 Helix (1-1) Friday 7 p.m.

For the third straight year section powers Cathedral Catholic and Helix meet in the preseason, and each of their meetings has been highly anticipated. The Dons come in fresh off a 13-7 win over Torrey Pines where their defense sealed the victory with a late stop. After losing to Eastlake in its season opener Helix bounced back last week against Vista with a 42-7 win. Both teams have talent, and whichever team controls the line of scrimmage will have the advantage in this early season showdown. The road team has won each of the last two meetings.

Point Loma (2-0) at #9 Mount Miguel (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.

Point Loma has eliminated Mount Miguel in the Division III playoffs in each of the past two years, so the Matadors won’t need any additional motivation when they host the Pointers on Friday night. Both teams come in undefeated, and whoever wins will solidify its spot in the Top 10.

Mt. Carmel (2-0) at San Pasqual (2-0) Friday 7 p.m.

Two of the section’s surprise unbeatens will look to keep rolling when the Sundevils head 10 miles north to face the Eagles. Mt. Carmel has started the season with wins over La Jolla and Mission Hills under the leadership of head coach John Anderson, who took over in August after Sanford Carvajal resigned for health reasons. San Pasqual has been convincing in its first two wins, beating Valley Center and Rancho Bernardo by an average of 25 points.

Olympian (0-1) at #6 Torrey Pines (1-1) Friday 7 p.m.

Torrey Pines fell to Division III favorite Cathedral Catholic last Friday, and the Falcons host another D-III contender when Olympian flies up from the South Bay. The Falcons beat the Eagles 28-0 last season, and this one should be a physical, low-scoring game.

In the Red Zone

Otay Ranch (1-1) at Mission Bay (1-1) Friday 3 p.m.

The Red Zone’s first Friday matinee of the season features two teams that bounced back last week after losing their season openers. Otay Ranch and Mission Bay met last season, with the Mustangs winning 34-17.

Coronado (2-0) at Santa Fe Christian (1-1) Saturday 2 p.m.

Coronado and Santa Fe Christian have met five times in the past three seasons, and their meeting Saturday in Solana Beach will wrap up Week 3 in the Red Zone. The Eagles won both of last year’s meetings against the Islanders and have won four of the last five. Can Coronado stay unbeaten and reverse the recent results?
