Week 10 High Five

Week 10 High Five

Olympian (5-3, 2-0 Metro Mesa) at #5 Eastlake (6-2, 2-0) Friday 7 p.m.

For the past four seasons the South Bay’s best league has belonged to Eastlake, and the Titans are again the team to beat after winning their first two Metro Mesa League games by an average of 29 points. Eastlake appears to have recovered from its midseason swoon heading into a first place showdown against Olympian in the Game of the Week. Olympian jumped to the Metro Mesa this season after winning the Metro Pacific in 2010 and hasn’t missed a beat so far, winning games against Otay Ranch and Chula Vista for an unbeaten start. On its current four-game winning streak Olympian has allowed an average of eight points per game, but the Eagles will have their hands full against an Eastlake offense full of speed. Though Eastlake and Olympian have lost a combined five games, those losses have come to teams with a combined 37-3 record. Will Eastlake continue its dominance of the South Bay or can Olympian usher in a changing of the guard?

Best of the Rest

Point Loma (6-2, 3-0 Western) at #8 Madison (8-0, 3-0) Friday 7 p.m.

Though Madison moved to the Western League last season, it hasn’t taken the Warhawks long to make themselves at home – Madison won the league title in 2010 and is a perfect 8-for-8 since the switch. The Warhawks’ biggest threat to running the table is Point Loma, and the Pointers come into the first place matchup with four wins in their last five games. Both teams have playmakers across the field, including quick running backs Pierre Cormier (Madison) and Jaivon Griffin (Point Loma) and this one could be a high-scoring affair. The winner clinches at least a share of the Western League championship.

Hilltop (4-4, 1-0 South Bay) at Mar Vista (7-1, 1-0) Friday 7 p.m.

Led by its run-heavy Double Wing offense, Mar Vista has been one of the biggest surprises this season. It’s no secret that Mar Vista likes to run – the Mariners have only attempted nine passes all season – but only Patrick Henry has solved them so far. Hilltop is Mar Vista’s biggest obstacle to a second consecutive Metro South Bay League title, and the Lancers head to Imperial Beach winners of three in a row after a 1-4 start. Mar Vista hasn’t tasted league defeat since the Metro South Bay was formed last season, a short streak that included a 40-27 win against Hilltop.

#3 Poway (7-0-1, 2-0 Palomar) at Torrey Pines (4-4, 2-1) Friday 7 p.m.

After watching Torrey Pines clinch the Palomar League title on its turf last year, Poway has the opportunity to return the favor against the Falcons this season. The Titans have made it halfway to a league title in comfortable fashion, and can clinch a share of the Palomar crown with a win against a Torrey Pines team that has won two straight and three of its last four. Poway has shown the ability to score points in bunches, and the Titans have won their first two league games by an average of 29 points. This should be a physical game that will be won on the ground.

Mt. Carmel (5-3, 2-1 Palomar) at Westview (5-3, 1-2) Friday 7 p.m.

Few rival schools in the section are closer than Mt. Carmel and Westview, who sit less than three miles apart along the 56 Highway. These neighbors have met every year since 2003, and the series has played close with the Sundevils owning a 5-3 advantage – including wins in each of the past two seasons. Though not league mates, no extra motivation will be needed in this game between teams that will be tough outs when the playoffs roll around.

In the Red Zone

Hoover (5-3, 2-1 Western) at Mission Bay (3-4-1, 1-2) Friday 2:30 p.m.

Francis Parker (4-3-1, 2-1 Coastal) at Santa Fe Christian (7-1, 3-0) Saturday 2 p.m.
