Late brunch, Old Town

Ed finds American comfort food in the heart of Old Town

Nothing more delicious than a guilty late brekky.

Sitting on the red bench seats in the sun outside the Living Room (2541 San Diego Avenue, Old Town, 619-325-4445). Okay, table wobbles, hot noonday sun, no umbrellas, and a skillet handle that's too hot to handle, but this is still a pretty cool place. Has this beautiful big patio looking across to the Spanish-style Church of the Immaculate Conception, trees (even though they have no leaves), and a nice grotto waterfall.

And above all, they serve breakfast this late, about two.

Whitney came over. She looks exactly like Modigliani's most famous model Jeanne Hébuterne (Carla's always bringing her up, like "Why can't you be a real artist like Modi and paint me?" Specially since we saw that bio movie). and halleluya! She said yes to desayuno, recommended the Italian skillet. I forked up $9.99, another dollar for a pot of guac., and $1.99 for a pretty big "small" mug of joe (with free refills!) and came outside.

Ah...fall into a swoon, imagining the Silver Dons clattering past on their fine horses. But Whitney turns up pretty quick, with this sizzling metal skillet on a well-used wooden plate. The omelet has ham, peppers, tomatoes, hash browns and toast. Hey the sign does say "All-American comfort food." But throw plenty of Tabasco on top and you've got yourself one heckuva breakfast.

Problem with this place: It's too hard to get off your duff and get on with your life. Specially with all these free refills. On the other hand, if. I stick around, maybe happy hour will catch up with me.
