Toni Weinfurtner is pushing the limits in the cupcake kingdom
This is a cupcake?
“It’s my French Toast cupcake,” says Toni. “It has bacon bits and maple butter cream frosting, plus bacon bits on top. It flies out of here.”
Actually, so does Toni. She’s a long-time flight attendant with Delta. Flies out of Lindbergh to Atlanta and back. But now she has set up this cupcake place (Weincakes Dessert Bistro, 1033 B Avenue, at the corner with Ynez, Coronado, 619-437-6400) with her family and bakes eight different kinds every day.
Okay every day she’s not in Atlanta.

I came across her place yesterday after I promised the beautiful Carla I’d bring back a couple of red velvet cupcakes, come hell, high water, or elections.
When I come in, this customer Yanna is taking delivery of a carrot cupcake ($2.95).
She bites in. "Ooh, real carrot pieces," she says.
The place is bright? Oh yes. Think Mondrian, that abstract kinda grid painter (art lessons with Carla are woiking!). Red, blue, lime green walls, yellow floor. It’s great.
I check the display cabinet. Quite a bit of empty space. And none of the bacon-maple cupcake she's just been getting me salivating about.
“Yes, we had a huge run today,” says Toni. “Election Day parties.”
I see two red velvets ($2.95 each), grab them for Carla, then decide maybe I deserve one too, given the effort and all. Toni recommends their vegan cupcake ($2.95)...
...a chocolatey little number with nice moist cakey part and icing. Goes great with the coffee ($1.75).
“It’s gluten and sugar-free,” says Toni. “Soy milk and lemon instead of eggs, coconut oil instead of butter in the frosting.”
It tastes way better than it sounds.
Only problem: I see they also have actual food in the afternoons. “Lite Bites.”
So now I’m settling in to a bowl of a soup-of-the-day ($5.50. Could have had a cupful for $3.75). It’s loaded with veggies, and chunks of steak. Plus onions, and you can detect herbs the presence of bay leaves.
Then, daggone it, I have to have one of their salads, a pretty delicious strawberry salad with romaine, chunks of feta cheese, almonds, strawbs, and balsamic dressing ($6.95).
“We’re hoping for a beer and wine license,” says Toni, “because my dream is for this to become a dessert bistro, where you can come, have something light, and dessert wines, or even local craft beers, to go with it. That’s why the name. 'Weincakes.' Wine and cakes. As well as a play on my last name, Weinfurtner. It means 'wine forager' in German.”
Meantime Toni says she bakes eight different cupcakes every day. "Always carrot, red velvet, white, and chocolate," she says. "After that, for the next four, I just let my imagination run hog-wild."
It’ll be a few months before the wine and beer thing happens, but I’m already dreaming: a Mission Dark Seas Russian Imperial stout and a red velvet? Or hey, an Arrogant u-know-wot with that bacon and maple cc?
