Las Hadas: Late Night Carnitas Heaven

Late night downtown?

Here’s a handy place for a late feed without breaking the bank or scuffling round trying to pick up a slice of pizza to chew down on the sidewalk.

Las Hadas (“The Fairies,” “Magical Women”), a kinda modern take on a Mexican cantina, I’m guessing (558 4th Avenue, 619-232-1720), has their happy hour kitchen open from opening till 7:00 p.m., then from 10:00 p.m. till midnight, or till 1:00 a.m. Sunday night.

They're right next to Dublin Square pub.

I come sit up to their modern, orange and white bar around 10:45 p.m., when just about every other kitchen in the ’lamp has closed.

Best deal is the $7 entrées section. It’s got generous dishes in there for the price, like chipotle BBQ ribs, and chile verde burger.

But for me, the real deal is the last offering: Pork sandwich. Like pulled pork, or carnitas. With fries. They warn you it’s subject to availability, but tonight we’re good.

And, man, they don’t skimp. I get served up a whopping torta sandwich loaded with salady stuff and a pile of nice juicy, flavorful pork. Plus a pot of spicy tomatoey stuff. And fries. Too much for even my space availability, actually.

I appreciate that they don't skimp here. So often, late-night bars in swanky spots give you, like, underwhelming amounts for your HH buck. Not here. This sandwich is a genuine sabroso feller-filler on a platter.

Oh, and if you don’t mind draft, they have $2 Tecates or Bud Lights. Perfect with the carnitas.
