Surfin' Veggie Burrito

Within the confines of Pacific Beach, Mission Blvd. is the nearest street parallel to the edge of the continent. For over 20 years Taco Surf has proudly stood on Mission Blvd. as the love child between surf and taco culture: a manifestation of its particular geographic location (30 minutes driving distance to Mexico, 30 seconds walking distance to the Pacific Ocean).

Upon entering this taqueria the first thing one notices is the ridiculous number of surfboards everywhere - on the walls, dangling from the ceiling, even a couple hanging above the kitchen. I was told by one of the co-owners, Cindy Mclarty, that the rest of the collection is at home. As an avid supporter of obsession I find the decor welcoming, despite the fact that I don't surf.

Taco Surf offers all the basics you would expect from a San Diegian taco shop: burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, tortas, crispy tacos, soft tacos, and rolled tacos, with most items under 5 dollars. The menu states, you can "build your own" veggie burrito: this is exactly what I came to do.

It is assumed you will want beans in your veggie burrito so it is considered the foundation of your Mexican cuisine engineering project and doesn't count as one of your 4 ingredients. My construction consisted of guacamole, rice, cheese, and salsa fresca, which I am confident was up to code, considering I outsourced the labor to experts.

8 minutes after these photos were taken, I experienced the human emotion of satisfaction. The meal was filling and didn't leave my hands oily, the way some burrito shops do.

Mclarty told me the web site is currently down because her daughter was revamping it in her IT class, which she dropped. If you are reading this Cindy, please go easy on your daughter. Working on web sites isn't as easy as it sounds, and those classes can be tough.
